GIMP Tutorial – How To Add A Glowing Border

Good afternoon!

I’m back with a brand new tutorial on how to add a glowing border in GIMP. I’ll spend a few minutes explaining and showing you the steps. Don’t forget to join my blog and tell my what you think by leaving a comment below. Now, let’s get started!

1.) Select the layer you want to add a glow to.

2.) Go the to the menu and click on Layer –> Transparency –> Alpha to Selection. Or Right Click (On Your Layer) –> Alpha To Selection.

3.) Go to the menu and click on Select –> Grow…

4.) Type in the number on how many pixels you want the glow to be. I suggest 5 is a good number.

5.) Click on Ok.

6.) Make a new layer and name it “Glow.”

7.) Click on the Bucket Fill tool and select the color of your glow.

8.) Make sure your “Glow” layer is selected and fill it in with Bucket Fill tool.

9.) Drag the “Glow” layer under the image that you want to have a glowing border.

10.) Go to the menu and click on Select None.

11.) Go to the menu and click on Filters –> Blur –> Gaussian Blur…

12.) Type in the number on how blurred you want the blur effect to be. 30.0 for both Horizontal and Vertical is a good number. Don’t forget to have RLE selected.

13.) Click on Ok.

14.) Now, if the blur isn’t strong enough, you can repeat steps 11-13 or just duplicate the layer.

I hope this helps you. Please leave a comment below by letting me know what you think and tell others about me as well. As for now, see you!
